  • NJ ACCA is a non-profit trade association for heating, ventilating, air conditioning & refrigeration contractors in the State of New Jersey. We represent & serve firms that design, install, service & repair air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, air purification & ventilating systems of all sizes & complexities. Membership includes manufacturers of equipment, wholesalers and distributors of equipment, vocational & technical schools, utilities & others with an interest in the HVAC industry. About Us - Since 1914 The New Jersey Air Conditioning Contractors Association’s history can be traced to the early 1900s during the pre-World War I era when central heating and factory mechanization was taking root. From these historical mile markers, two organizations emerged to become voices for workers in the industry: the National Warm Air Heating and Air Conditioning Association (NWAHACA) – established in 1914 to represent manufacturers, wholesalers, and contractors – and the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors of America (ARCA) – established in 1946 to represent contractors exclusively. In 1968, NWAHACA dissolved to merge with ARCA. Manufacturer members became part of what is now known as the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute (ARI). Before departing NWAHACA, the manufacturers established a trust fund to assist contractors in operating an independent trade organization. The tangible assets of NWAHACA, as well as the rights to the technical manuals program, were transferred to the contractor members. This careful planning resulted in the formation of a new entity, the National Environmental Systems Contractors Association (NESCA), which was incorporated on January 1, 1969. In 1978, NESCA was renamed Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). In 2015, ACCA became an independent state-wide association which is highlighted in our new name of NJ ACCA.

Should I repair or replace my old furnace?

Deciding between repairing or replacing your furnace depends on
  • Age: Furnaces typically last 15-20 years. If yours is significantly older, replacement is often the better long-term choice.
  • Frequency and Cost of Repairs: If you've been having repeated repairs, replacing the furnace might be more cost-effective in the long run.
  • Energy Efficiency: Newer furnaces are significantly more energy-efficient, which can lead to lower energy bills.
  • Safety Concerns: Older furnaces might have safety issues, such as carbon monoxide leaks. A new furnace offers enhanced safety features.
Consult with a trusted HVAC professional to assess your furnace and get recommendations.

How can I tell if my furnace filter needs changing?

You should change your furnace filter regularly, typically every 1-3 months, or more often if you have pets or allergies. Here are some signs your filter needs changing:
  • Reduced Airflow: Noticeably weaker airflow from your vents.
  • Dusty Vents: Dust accumulation around your vents.
  • Increased Dust: More dust than usual in your home.
  • Allergies or Respiratory Issues: Worsening allergy symptoms or respiratory problems.
  • Higher Energy Bills: A dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing your furnace to work harder.
  • Overheating: The system overheats due to restricted airflow.
Check your filter monthly and change it as needed to keep your system running efficiently.

What is the best temperature to set my thermostat in summer?

The best temperature to set your thermostat in summer depends on your personal preferences and how much you’re willing to spend on energy costs. A general recommendation is to set your thermostat to 78°F (26°C) when you're home and awake. You can save energy by setting the thermostat higher when you're away or asleep.

  • Furnace not heating: Pilot light or ignition control issues, blower motor problems, or clogged filters.
  • Uneven temperatures: Ductwork leaks, inadequate insulation, or faulty thermostats.
  • Poor air quality: Dirty air filters, mold growth in ductwork, or inadequate ventilation.
  • Strange noises: Unusual sounds from the system can indicate a variety of problems with different components.
